AZAR

"AZAR plays with the unpredictable, the things that cannot be explained or defined, and points us to creative possibility. Everything we need to play is right in front of us. We must learn again to discover the beautiful wonder of life.

This work draws its inspiration from fragments, the clown's state of wonder and ideas of perception. It is a philosophical work. AZAR invites you to take an imaginative trip with a stunning performer."

"AZAR is an exploration, a meditation on the fundamental question of Life: "Where am I?" Perception, expectation, discovery, all drive the simple naive consciousness in its foolish attempt to gain mastery over immediate experience."

Audience Recommendation:

The show is recommended for ages 8 and above.

"Each performance is completely unique. While some elements are the same, the experience which unfolds is never the same twice. Just as any two days may have many similar elements, but no two days ever unfold the same.

AZAR is an exploration, a meditation on the fundamental question of Life: "Where am I?"

Perception, expectation, discovery, all drive the simple naive consciousness in its foolish attempt to gain mastery over immediate experience.

The Tao has been described as "that which cannot be described." In other words, the Tao which can be described is not the Tao. And so it goes. This piece is a journey of sorts, an experiment in relationships: between my senses and my immediate surroundings, between my inner and outer experience, between my history and the unknowable events to come.

It seems to me there has been a great shift in our social consciousness toward judging and criticizing and away from listening and being present for one another, and for ourselves. It seems people are always trying to prove themselves to others. The absurdity is that we all discover later in life that just being true to who we are receives the greatest response of support and fascination. And this is in fact how we started life. Innocent. Unable to project anything more than honest experience and reaction.

Expectation has become such a driving factor in our society, and it contributes to increases in fear and distrust. The question I wish to ask is "Can we return to a state of wonder, a state of curiosity for all things, of witnessing rather than always sitting with the impulse to be critical of what we are observing?"

AZAR sounds unsettling to some, stimulating a feeling of things unplanned, unprepared, without purpose. But in fact all experience is random in some way. Our mental, psycho-emotional process has been trained to only consider a tiny fraction of the information our senses receive in any given moment. It is a strategy for managing stability, for staying within predictable outcomes, for keeping the ship seemingly afloat in unpredictable seas. But such restriction too often denies the mind of the possibilities which may lie in the multitude of "useless or unfamiliar" information. This piece is a play on this very idea. "
